Cancer prevention, the natural way
Somewhere, a Big Pharma boss is cursing… because multiple new studies show how you can dramatically lower your risk for a common cancer using plain old good nutrition and healthy living.
That’s right – no expensive drugs, so no big drug company profits.
Combined, the studies show how fish oil, selenium and not smoking all add up to a lower risk for colorectal cancer.
In the first study, researchers compared a selenium-based supplement that also contained zinc, methionine and vitamins A, C and E to a placebo in patients with a history of colorectal polyps. The researchers found that those taking the supplement had a 40 percent lower risk than those taking the placebo.
Researchers believe that over 15 years, nearly half of those taking the selenium compound would remain polyp-free, versus less than a third of those who don’t take it, according to research presented at an American Association for Cancer Research conference.
Many polyps are benign, so they don’t always mean cancer… but since most colorectal cancers start out as polyps, reducing their recurrence is key to lowering your overall risk. Another recent survey that found fish oil could also reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.
Researchers at that same AACR conference found that Caucasians with the highest amounts of fish oil in their diets had a 39 percent lower risk of colorectal cancer than those who got the least.
African-American participants did not appear to share the benefit. No one quite knows why – but it may be related to the fact that they have a much higher risk for colorectal cancer than whites in general.
Finally, a long-term study published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention found that smokers have a 27 percent increased risk of colorectal cancer. The message here is clear: Don’t smoke… and if you do, quit. Ex-smokers managed to lower that risk over time.
Then, be sure to get regular colonoscopies – one of the few effective cancer screenings out there.
And that’s not the only natural cancer-fighter making news.
